The AI Act Omnibus: Timeline, Key Players, and Documents (April Update)

Two weeks of Interinstitutional Technical Meetings (ITMs) on the AI Omnibus are starting today. It seems that all is set for a political deal in Strasburg on 28 April 2026 and a sucessful conclusion of the legislative file in the summer.


AI Omnibus – The Timeline


EU policymakers are under a lot of pressure to postpone the AI Act’s high-risk obligations in time. Those rules would otherwise apply on 02 August 2026. To finish the legislative procedure before, the Parliament has conclude the discussion on its draft report in April and now seeks a quick deal with the EU Member States.




AI Omnibus – The Policymakers


EU policymakers face a tough political call. Not only do many EU firms feel ill-prepared when it comes to the high-risk obligation of the AI Act, the European Commission and Member States also did not manage to establish the required governance mechanism. At the same time, critics however point out that the AI Omnibus questions important political achievements and would undermine legal safeguards of EU citizens.
